1. TGF-beta signaling in cancer
Sammanfattning : Transforming Growth Factor Beta (TGF-β) is a cytokine regulating a wide range of cellular processes such as proliferation, differentiation, and migration. At the early stages of cancer development TGF-β functions as a tumor suppressor, mainly due to its inhibitory effect on cellular growth, but during cancer progression, mutations in TGF-β signal components switches TGF-β into a promoter of cancer cell proliferation, survival and metastasis. 2. Mechanisms for TGF-β-Mediated Regulation of the Actin Filament System and Apoptosis
Sammanfattning : Transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) is a member of a large superfamily of cytokines which participate in many different types of cellular processes, such as growth inhibition, cell migration, differentiation, cell adhesion, wound healing and immunosuppression. Alterations of TGF-β superfamily signalling results in several different disorders, including bone disease, vascular disease and cancer. LÄS MER
3. Studies of human endogenous retroviruses and of the TGF-beta signaling pathway
Sammanfattning : The human genome, in common with all mammalian genomes, carries a high load of inheritable retroviral sequences. We have identified and characterized a novel family of these endogenous retroviruses and have named this family HERV-F as based on the primer binding sites of three members. LÄS MER
4. Expression of TGF- isoforms, their receptors and related SMAD proteins in brain pathology : Immunohistochemical studies focusing on infarcts, abscesses and malignant gliomas
Sammanfattning : This thesis focuses on the immunohistochemical expression of transforming growth factor beta(TGFβ) isoforms, their receptors and TGF-β-related SMAD proteins in brain pathology, chiefly in-farcts. One key question was whether the expressions of these compounds are altered within glial cells, endothelial cells of microvessels and other cell types in the vicinity of infarcts. LÄS MER
5. Experimental Models of the Human Peritoneal Environment: Effects of TGF-beta and Hyaluronan
Sammanfattning : BACKGROUND Post surgical adhesion formation is still an unsolved problem and occurs when there is an imbalance between fibrin deposition and fibrin clearing capacity in the abdominal cavity. Transforming growth factor beta (TGF-?) is associated with fibrosis and hyaluronan has in several studies been showed to reduce adhesions. LÄS MER
