1. Targets for immune mediated killing of tumor cells and T cell functions in B-CLL
Sammanfattning : There is a great need for developing and improving treatment alternatives in B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL). New therapeutical approaches based on the manipulation of the immune system enable establishment of enhanced control over the malignant clone. LÄS MER
2. Immune activation during HIV-1 infection : implication for B cell dysfunctions and therapy monitoring
Sammanfattning : Aberrant activation of cells of the immune system plays a major role in the pathogenesis of HIV infection. The major aims of the thesis were: (a) to measure the effects of current antiretroviral therapy on immune activation through the analysis of soluble activation markers; (b) to evaluate the extent of T and B cell immune activation in relation to immunological and virological parameters; (c) to analyse the T-B cell molecular pathway leading to hyperactivation of B cells and loss of B cell function. 3. Impairment of B cell trafficking and differentiation during HIV-1 infection
Sammanfattning : During the course of HIV-1 infection, several B cell dysfunctions occur as result of virus replication and indirect mechanisms of immunopathology. The B cells abnormalities include hypergammaglobulinemia, a decreased number of memory B cells, increased levels of activation markers on B cell surface and plasmacytosis. LÄS MER
4. Human cytomegalovirus and dendritic cell interaction : role in immunosupression and autoimmunity
Sammanfattning : Human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with an impaired immune system. The virus itself can cause transitory but significant immunosuppression in immunocompetent as well as immunocompromised infected individuals. LÄS MER
5. Multifunctional Biomimetic Scaffolds Tailored for Cardiac Regeneration
Sammanfattning : Nature has had millions of years to perfect the structural components of the human body, but has also produced the dysfunctions that result in the cancers and diseases, which ruin that perfection. Congenital heart defects, and myocardial infarction lead to scarring that remodels heart muscle, decreasing the contractility of the heart, with profound consequences for the host. LÄS MER
