  1. 1. Studies on PCSK9 in the regulation of cholesterol metabolism

    Författare :Lena Persson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :aging;

    Sammanfattning : Elevated levels of plasma cholesterol, mainly in low density lipoproteins (LDL), are a major risk factor for coronary heart disease. The level of plasma LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) is largely dependent on the number of hepatic LDL receptors (LDLRs). LÄS MER

  2. 2. Studies on the molecular regulation of bile acids and lipoproteins in human liver

    Författare :Lisa-Mari Nilsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Elevated lipid levels in the bloodstream, in particular high levels of LDL cholesterol, are a major risk factor for the development of atherosclerosis. The liver has a central role in cholesterol metabolism and is the only organ capable of a quantitative elimination of cholesterol from the body. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Studies on cholesterol and bile acid metabolism in relation to plasma lipoproteins

    Författare :Beatrice Sjöberg; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : The metabolism of cholesterol and bile acids is tightly controlled but only partially characterized. The liver is responsible for most of the clearance and catabolism of plasma cholesterol, and the hepatocyte expression of LDL receptors is central in this process. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Studies on cholesterol homeostasis by modulation of lipoproteins and bile acids

    Författare :Lisa-Mari Nilsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Cholesterol; lipoproteins; bile acids; cholestyramine; chenodeoxycholic acid; CYP7A1; HNF4alpha; PCSK9; hepatocytes; ethanol; atherosclerosis; ApoE; thyroid hormone receptor;

    Sammanfattning : Excess plasma cholesterol, in particular high levels of LDL cholesterol, is a major risk factor for the development of atherosclerosis. The liver has a central role in the regulation of cholesterol metabolism: i) a major part of the cholesterol present in the body is synthesized in the liver; ii) the level of plasma lipoproteins is regulated by liver uptake and secretion of these particles and iii) the liver is essential for elimination of cholesterol from the body as such or by its conversion into bile acids. 5. 5. Genetic and metabolic studies of APOE, PCSK9, TM6SF2 and PNPLA3

    Författare :Hovsep Mahdessian; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Lipids – including fatty acids (FAs), triglycerides (TGs), cholesterol and cholesterol esters (CEs) – are hydrophobic molecules involved in several important structural and mechanistic processes. Lipids are found in cellular membranes, give posture and stability to the cell, are actively participating in cellular signaling, and act as mediators in several important biological pathways. LÄS MER
