    Sammanfattning : Gasoline direct injection with spray-guided charge formation is one of the most promising concepts to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of spark ignited engines.     Sammanfattning : Structured laser illumination planar imaging (SLIPI) is a technique capable of suppressing multiple light scattering effects in optically dense sprays, resulting in spray images without blurs and with enhanced contrast. The novelty of the work presented in this thesis concerns the applications of a variety of SLIPI-based techniques for the measurement of droplet size, droplet concentration, and liquid temperature in atomizing sprays.     Sammanfattning : A promising combustion concept that aims at reducing emissions from DI Diesel engines is HCCI (Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition). To achieve a combustible air/fuel mixture in such an engine one possible strategy is early fuel injection during the compression stroke, even though the in-cylinder conditions are different from those in conventional DI diesel engines.     Sammanfattning : The use of fuel blends (conventional fuels blended with renewable ones) has gained importance in the automotive industry as an option to reduce emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. In order to make the fuel blends commercially viable, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is used to complement the experiments (done on engines or spray chambers) by providing fundamental insight into spray formation.
