  1. 1. Seismicity Analyses Using Dense Network Data : Catalogue Statistics and Possible Foreshocks Investigated Using Empirical and Synthetic Data

    Författare :Angeliki Adamaki; Roland Roberts; Beata Orlecka-Sikora; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Statistical Seismology; Earthquake Catalogue Statistics; Seismicity Patterns; Precursors; Foreshocks; Στατιστική Σεισμολογία; Κατάλογοι Σεισμών; Μοτίβα Σεισμικότητας; Πρόδρομα Φαινόμενα; Προσεισμοί; Geofysik med inriktning mot seismologi; Geophysics with specialization in Seismology;

    Sammanfattning : Precursors related to seismicity patterns are probably the most promising phenomena for short-term earthquake forecasting, although it remains unclear if such forecasting is possible. Foreshock activity has often been recorded but its possible use as indicator of coming larger events is still debated due to the limited number of unambiguously observed foreshocks. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Seismicity and crustal structure in Iceland

    Författare :Claudia Abril; Ólafur Gudmundsson; Vala Hjörleifsdóttir; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earthquake relocation; local earthquake tomography;

    Sammanfattning : The main goal of this Ph.D. thesis is to improve locations of earthquake hypocenters and to resolve heterogeneous crustal structure and its effects on travel times. The data and case studies are drawn from the Icelandic national SIL network and the temporary NICE project deploy-ment in the Tjörnes Fracture Zone. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Listening to the story of the rock mass : The integration of conventional and unconventional data to understand rock mass behaviour at the Kiirunavaara Mine

    Författare :Jessica Vatcher; Stephen D McKinnon; Jonny Sjöberg; Dick Stacey; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Mining and Rock Engineering; Gruv- och Berganläggningsteknik;

    Sammanfattning : The need to understand rock mass behaviour has never been greater; as mining globally progresses deeper to extract the precious resources humankind needs to maintain and forward our lives, we encounter rock behaviours associated with deep mining. These environments typically experience seismicity (including fault slip), rock bursting, strain bursting, spalling, aseismic movement along pre-existing discontinuities, and ground falls. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Crustal stress studies using microearthquakes and boreholes

    Författare :Björn Lund; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Earth sciences; Geovetenskap; Geofysik med inriktning mot fasta jordens fysik; Geophysics with specialization in Solid Earth Physics;

    Sammanfattning : The state of stress in the crust is essential for the understanding of geodynamic processes such as the transmission of plate driving forces through the lithosphere and the triggering of earthquakes. This thesis describes the development and application of new methods for the estimation of crustal stresses. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Statistical Seismology Studies in Central America : b-value, seismic hazard and seismic quiescence

    Författare :David Aníbal Monterroso Juárez; Ota Kulhánek; Stefan Wiemer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Geophysics; b-value; seismic hazard; Monte Carlo; seismic quiescence; Central America; stress; Geofysik; Geophysics; Geofysik;

    Sammanfattning : The present thesis collects results of research applying theory and methods of statistical seismology to the seismicity of Central America, a region with a complex tectonic setting controlled by the interaction of four major plates, namely the Caribbean, Cocos, Nazca and North American plates.Three different earthquake catalogues were used for studies focused on stress in a tectonic volume, seismic hazard maps and seismicity patterns (precursors), covering the region 94ºW to 81ºW and 5ºN to 20ºN.
