1. Causes and Consequences of Impulsivity in Red Junglefowl
Sammanfattning : Throughout the animal kingdom, animals vary in cognition (i.e., how they acquire, process, store, and act on environmental information). Yet, the causes and consequences of this variation are currently unclear. LÄS MER
2. Behavioural aspects of conservation breeding : Red junglefowl (Gallus gallus) as a case study
Sammanfattning : Ett stort antal utrotningshotade djurarter ingår idag i bevarandeprogram världen över. Små populationer hålls då i skyddade miljöer, exempelvis i djurparker, och i många fall är målet att återintroducera djur till naturen. LÄS MER
3. Survival of the Tamest : The Domesticated Phenotype in Red Junglefowl Selected for Tameness
Sammanfattning : Early animal domestication was probably associated with reduced fear of humans. Domestication is a process in which animals adapt to humans and the captive environment provided by humans. Selection on tameness as the only trait has previously been found to generate changes in other phenotypes in different animal species. LÄS MER
4. Characterisation of social behaviour in red junglefowl and White leghorn laying hens : phenotypic and genetic studies
Sammanfattning : The objective of this thesis was, by using two model strains of chicken, red junglefowl and White Leghorn layer, to study differences in social behaviour of the species that could be derived from domestication and production related selection processes. The social phenotype characterisation was done to be able to further study the association of the social differences to specific production related traits as well as to certain genome areas in intercross and backcross lines generated from these two parental populations. 5. Behavioural differences and genetic relationships between four captive populations of red junglefowl (Gallus gallus) : possible implications for conservation
Sammanfattning : Conservation of species is to a large extent carried out by zoos where animals are kept in small populations under protected conditions. The ultimate goal of such ex situ conservation programs is to eventually reintroduce the animals into natural habitats to provide support for the survival of the species. LÄS MER
