  1. 1. Crisis in Energy Metabolism - Mitochondrial Defects and a New Disease Entity

    Författare :Gittan Kollberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Energy metabolism; Mitochondrial Disorders; mtDNA; multiple mtDNA deletions; Alpers-Huttenlocher syndrome; POLG1; GYS1; glycogen synthase; point mutation; Polymerase gamma;

    Sammanfattning : Impairment of energy metabolism may be associated with severe implications for affected individuals since all fundamental cell functions are energy-dependent. Disorders of energy metabolism are often genetic and associated with defects in the oxidative phosphorylation in mitochondria. LÄS MER

  2. 2. The consequences of DNA lesions for mitochondrial DNA maintenance

    Författare :Josefin M. E. Forslund; Sjoerd Wanrooij; Nasim Sabouri; Erik Johansson; Claes Gustafsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Mitochondria; mitochondrial DNA; DNA replication; DNA lesions; DNA polymerase γ; ribonucleotide incorporation; medicinsk biokemi; Medical Biochemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Eukaryotic cells have their own energy-producing organelles called mitochondria. The energy is stored in the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) molecule and is produced via the oxidative phosphorylation process inside the mitochondria. Thirteen of the essential proteins required for this process are encoded on the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). LÄS MER

  3. 3. Molecular mechanisms of mammalian mitochondrial DNA replication and transcription

    Författare :Mina Pellegrini; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Mitochondrion; DNA polymerase gamma; mtSSB; TWINKLE; DNA replication; transcription; mTERF; MTERF3; MTERF2; nucleoid;

    Sammanfattning : Mitochondria are cytoplasmic organelles in eukaryotic cells, mainly devoted to the synthesis of ATP, through the Oxydative Phospshorylation System (OXPHOS). The organelle has its own genome, the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) that encodes for all the RNA components of the mitochondrial translation apparatus (two rRNAs and 22 tRNAs) and for 13 subunits of the OXPHOS complexes. 4. 4. Immunological studies in the brain and signaling pathways in experimental African trypanosomiasis

    Författare :Ahmed Sharafeldin; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Trypanosoma brucei; Cytokines; Chemokines; IFN-gamma; Transcription factors;

    Sammanfattning : African Trypanosomiasis is a disease prevalent among humans and animals in tropical Africa which is caused by the extracellular hemoflagellate Trypanosoma brucei (T. b.). LÄS MER

  5. 5. Studies on uptake and effect of triclosan on production of inflammatory mediators in human gingival fibroblasts

    Författare :Manal Mustafa; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :Triclosan; gingival fibroblasts; IL-beta; IFN-gamma; MHC class II; PGE2; mPGES-1;

    Sammanfattning : Triclosan (2,4,4'-trichloro-2'-hydroxy-diphenyl ether) is a lipid soluble anti-bacterial agent widely used in dentifrices, mouthrinses, soap and cosmetics. Although reports on the efficacy of triclosan on periodontal diseases are conflicting, it is documented in clinical studies that dentifrices containing triclosan reduce plaque accumulation and improve gingival health.
