1. Neuromuscular disorders in childhood. Epidemiology and characterization of a new myopathy
Sammanfattning : Neuromuscular disorders can be subdivided into anterior horn cell disorders, neuropathies, myasthenic disorders and myopathies. Some multisystem disorders, such as myotonic dystrophy and mitochondrial encephalomyopathies, are traditionally also included. LÄS MER
2. Effects of repetitive work on proprioception and of stretching on sensory mechanisms : implications for work-related neuromuscular disorders
Sammanfattning : The aims of the thesis were (i) to investigate the impact of repetitive low-intensity work exposure on proprioception and (ii) to examine effects of muscle stretching (especially sensory effects and effects on muscle nociception) and to relate its application to the prevention, alleviation and/or treatment of work-related neuromuscular disorders. The effects of low-intensity repetitive work on the shoulder proprioception were tested in healthy subjects. LÄS MER
3. Studies on ventilatory function in chronic neuromuscular disorders
Sammanfattning : Ventilatory dysfunction is common in neuromuscular disorders (NMD). The present studies aimed at evaluating and developing methods for diagnosis of ventilatory function in NMD. Methods included were diaphragmatic EMG (EMGdi), blood gas monitoring assessed at rest and during exercise and nocturnal respiratory and sleep parameters. LÄS MER
4. Towards Better Understanding of Etiological Mechanisms at the Neuromuscular Junction
Sammanfattning : The neuromuscular junction (NMJ) serves as a model for understanding the mechanisms that determine communication between neurons and their target cells. Disorders of the NMJ can be either autoimmune or genetic (hereditary). LÄS MER
5. Myosin myopathy. A new disease entity
Sammanfattning : By the discovery and characterization of two familial myopathies caused by mutations in myosin heavy chaingenes, we introduce a new entity within the field of neuromuscular disorders: Myosin myopathyThe first myopathy affected a family in western Sweden. Previous linkage analysis had located the gene tochromosome 17p13. LÄS MER
