1. Nuclear Magnetic Relaxation in Micellar Solution and Lyotropic Liquid Crystals. Tools and Applications
Sammanfattning : Structurally, this Thesis is divided into two parts thatdescribe (i) the hardware development for NMR relaxationstudies and (ii) its applications for studies of the surfactantsystems. The developed hardware solutions allow to expand thefrequency range covered by conventional NMR spectrometers tomake NMR experiments feasible at resonance frequencies down to100 kHz. 2. Probing Dynamics of Oligosaccharides by Interference Phenomena in NMR Relaxation
Sammanfattning : Oligosaccharides (carbohydrates) are a large class of biological molecules that are important as energy sources in the human body and have enormously varied biological functions. It is generally believed that biological activities of carbohydrates are related to their internal dynamics. LÄS MER

4. Adsorption, aggregation and phase separation in colloidal systems
Sammanfattning : The thesis presents work regarding amphiphilic molecules associated in aqueous solution or at the liquid/solid interface. Two main topics are included: the temperature-dependent behavior of micelles and the adsorption of dispersants on carbon nanotube (CNT) surfaces. LÄS MER
5. Magnetic relaxation studies of self-associating and membrane proteins
Sammanfattning : Magnetic relaxation dispersion measurements have been performed on aqueous protein solutions to study the dynamics of waters in the proton transport channel of bacteriorhodopsin and the self-association of the proteins BPTI, lysozyme and beta-lactoglobulin. The measurements have focused on the bulk relaxation rates, R1 and R2, of three water nuclei 1H, 2H and 17O that are coupled to the protein environments by exchange and therefore report on properties such as the protein tumbling and dynamics of internal waters.
