  1. 1. Study of molecular mechanism(s) underlying neurodegeneration in SCA7 disease : Role of NOX enzymes and oxidative stress

    Författare :Abiodun Ajayi; Anna-Lena Ström; Boris Zhivotosky; Bengt Mannervik; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; neurodegeneration; polyglutamine; oxidative stress; metabolism; NADPH oxidase; neurokemi med molekylär neurobiologi; Neurochemistry with Molecular Neurobiology;

    Sammanfattning : Spinocerebellar ataxia type 7 (SCA7) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder caused by a CAG trinucleotide expansion in the SCA7/ATXN7 gene resulting in progressive ataxia and retinal dystrophy. SCA7 belongs to a group of neurodegenerative disorders called polyglutamine (polyQ) diseases, that share the common feature of glutamine tract expansions within otherwise unrelated proteins. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Adrenergic signaling in insulin-sensitive tissues

    Författare :Daniel L. Yamamoto; Tore Bengtsson; Barbara Cannon; Michael Cawthorne; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Metabolism; Adrenergic; Glucose; Signaling; Skeletal muscle; Animal physiology; Zoofysiologi; zoofysiologi; Zoological physiology;

    Sammanfattning : Glucose metabolism in insulin-sensitive tissues such as skeletal muscle and adipose tissue is tightly regulated by external stimuli. Metabolic changes in these tissues have direct effects on whole body metabolism. Such metabolic changes can be induced or influenced by adrenergic stimulation. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Structural Insights into the Acquisition and Storage of Iron

    Författare :Ulrika Schagerlöf; Biokemi och Strukturbiologi; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Strukturkemi; Molecular biophysics; Molekylär biofysik; Structure chemistry; single particle; ferric reductase; human phagocyte superoxide-generating NADPH oxidase; frataxin; cryo electron microscopy; FRO2; iron homeostasis; iron acquisition;

    Sammanfattning : It is of vital importance to understand the systems for iron metabolism and this thesis contributes to this by providing insights into the structure and function of the acquisition and homeostasis of iron. The two proteins that have been primarily investigated are a ferric reductase from Arabidopsis thaliana called FRO2 and a mitochondrial iron chaperone from Saccharomyces cerevisiae called frataxin. 4. 4. Mechanisms of platelet-mediated fibroblast proliferation

    Författare :Cecilia Berg; Linköpings universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Sammanfattning : Wound healing is a multicomponent event that involves a network of molecular and cellular crosstalk between cells, including leukocytes, platelets and fibroblasts. Despite increased knowledge over the past decades regarding the regulation of cell and tissue growth, the inter- and intracellular systems that control wound healing are incompletely understood. 5. 5. Mammalian thioredoxin reductase 1 in antioxidant defense, regulation of adipocyte differentiation and as an anticancer drug target

    Författare :Xiaoxiao Peng; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are oxygen containing reactive molecules generated as by-products of cellular metabolism. At physiological concentrations, ROS acts as secondary messengers in cellular signaling transduction, but excessive amounts of ROS result in oxidative stress and cellular damage. LÄS MER
