6. Smoking and airway disorders in an urban population -special references to gender and socioeconomic status
Sammanfattning : The Malmö Preventive Project, a preventive, case-finding programme for cardiovascular risk factors and alcohol abuse was created in 1974 at the Department of Preventive Medicine of Malmö University Hospital. Between 1974-1992, a total of 22 444 men (mean age 44 years range 27 - 61) and 10 902 women (mean age 50 years, range 28 - 58) attended the programme, with an overall attendance rate of 70% (range 64-78). 7. Tissue transglutaminase autoantibodies in childhood celiac disease
Sammanfattning : Celiac disease is a prevalent small bowel disease in children caused by permanent intolerance against gliadin, which is the alcohol-soluble fraction of the cereal protein gluten in wheat, rye and barley. Celiac disease is characterized by an inflammatory infiltrate of CD4+ T lymphocytes in the intestinal mucosa leading to damage of villous structure and loss of absorptive surface. LÄS MER
8. Aspects of chronic autoimmune thyroiditis in children and adolescents
Sammanfattning : The aims of this thesis were to 1) compare different methods for detection of antibodies against thyroglobulin (TgAb) and thyroid peroxidase (TPOAb), particulary in children with chronic autoimmune thyroditis (AIT), 2) investigate if maternal enterovirus infection is a risk factor for development of AIT in offspring, 3) ascertain the prevalence of thyroid autoantibodies in cord blood sera from children who later developed AIT, 4) develop a new reference standard for interpretation of normative thyroid volumes in Swedish children, and 5) evaluate the effect of Levothyroxine (L-thyroxine) treatment on thyroid size in children and adolescents with AIT. We found that 1) Methods based on radioimmunoassay (RIA) were more efficient in detecting both TgAb and TPOAb in children with AIT than methods based on agglutination. LÄS MER
9. Molecular and morphological studies on non-healing venous leg ulcers
Sammanfattning : Chronic skin ulcers are a major health problem and an increasing burden on health care providers. These ulcers have various underlying causes, such as venous or arterial insufficiency, diabetes, or vasculitis. Non-healing venous leg ulcers represent a condition characterized by excessive inflammation and presence of bacteria. LÄS MER
10. Monoamine transporters in female human reproduction
Sammanfattning : The present study explored the gene and protein expression of the monoamine transporters in human endometrium throughout the menstrual cycle, in early decidua and in placentas from normal as well as preeclamptic pregnancies using in-situ hybridization, real time-PCR, immunohistochemistry and primary tissue cultures. Four distinguishable patterns were observed in the endometrium over the menstrual cycle: (1) epithelial expression of norepinephrine transporter (NET) mRNA, (2) Stromal co- expression of vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2) and plasma membrane monoamine transporter (PMAT) mRNAs with maximal intensity in the proliferative phase; (3) increasing epithelial expression of VMAT2 mRNA with a maximum in the late secretory phase; (4) stromal expression of extra-neuronal monoamine transporter (EMT) mRNA with a peak in the early secretory phase.
