1. Insulin-antagonistic neurohormonal pathways in the development of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes
Sammanfattning : According to the current paradigm, the development of type 2 diabetes is driven by insulin resistance and the gradual failure of beta cells to compensate for this by secreting adequate amounts of insulin. Obesity is an important risk factor for type 2 diabetes and is considered to influence disease development primarily by induction of insulin resistance, via mechanisms that have not been fully elucidated. 2. Spectral Analysis of Neutron Capture Elements in the Laboratory and Stars
Sammanfattning : The pedigree of the elements heavier than iron is a vital question in the history and evolution of our galaxy. The elements up to and including those of the iron group are produced mainly through fusion processes within stars, giving the stars their energy. LÄS MER
3. Conformation of polypeptides at nanoparticles interfaces : protein structural changes and induced folding of peptides
Sammanfattning : This thesis can be divided into two parts. The first deals with characterization of structural and dynamic consequences for proteins of interactions with a solid surface in the form of silica nanoparticles. LÄS MER
4. Towards an everyday peace? Exploring the political significance of everyday life in post-war Nepal
Sammanfattning : This thesis aims to further our understanding of the political significance of everyday life in post-war Nepal. Building on the ethnographic turn of the everyday peace literature, I treat everyday life as a site of political potentiality as I explore how (if at all) this potentiality is practised in the context of post-war Nepal. 5. On Amoebas and Multidimensional Residues
Sammanfattning : This thesis consists of four papers and an introduction. In Paper I we calculate the second order derivatives of the Ronkin function of an affine polynomial in three variables. This gives an expression for the real Monge-Ampére measure associated to the hyperplane amoeba. LÄS MER
