1. Primary Marine Aerosol : Validation of sea spray source functions using observations and transport modeling
Sammanfattning : Sea spray aerosols (SSA) are an important part of the climate system through their effects on the global radiative budget, both directly as scatterers and absorbers of solar and terrestrial radiation, and indirectly as cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) influencing cloud formation, lifetime and precipitation. In terms of their global mass, SSA is the largest source and has the largest uncertainty of all aerosols. LÄS MER
2. Quantification of sources and removal mechanisms of atmospheric aerosol particles
Sammanfattning : The focus of this work has been to quantify important processes for climatically relevant aerosols, and to improve our understanding of, and ability to accurately model, aerosols in the atmosphere on a large scale. This thesis contains five papers focused on different parts of the life cycle of atmospheric aerosol particles. LÄS MER
3. Inverse Modeling of Cloud – Aerosol Interactions
Sammanfattning : The role of aerosols and clouds is one of the largest sources of uncertainty in understanding climate change. The primary scientific goal of this thesis is to improve the understanding of cloud-aerosol interactions by applying inverse modeling using Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) simulation. LÄS MER
4. The high Arctic summer aerosol : Size, chemical composition, morphology and evolution over the pack-ice
Sammanfattning : Aerosol particles, especially in the high Arctic are still not very well represented in climate models. Particle size and number concentrations are strongly under-predicted and temporal variations of aerosol composition and size are still not very well understood, mainly due to the sparsity of observations. 5. Primary Marine Aerosol Production : Studies using bubble-bursting experiments
Sammanfattning : Aerosol particles affect the Earth’s climate, although their impact is associated with large uncertainties. Primary marine aerosol represents a significant fraction of the global aerosol budget considering the Earth’s 70-percentage coverage by oceans. LÄS MER
