1. Biochemical Control Aspects in Lignin Polymerization
Sammanfattning : Lignins are produced by all vascular plants and they represent one of the most abundant groups of biopolymers in nature. Lignin chemistry research, which has been of great importance for the progress of pulping technologies, has been plagued by the difficulties of its isolation and characterization. LÄS MER
2. Quantum Chemical Studies of Protein-Bound Chromophores, UV-Light Induced DNA Damages, and Lignin Formation
Sammanfattning : Quantum chemical methods have been used to provide a better understanding of the photochemistry of astaxanthin and phytochromobilin; the photoenzymic repair of UV-light induced DNA damages; and the formation of lignin. The carotenoid astaxanthin (AXT) is responsible for the colouration of lobster shell. LÄS MER
3. New regulators of xylem lignification in arabidopsis
Sammanfattning : The ability of land plants to grow upright, bear their own weight and withstand adverse environmental conditions is largely dependent on the secondary xylem tissues of the stem. The xylem cells acquire thick secondary cell walls which are composed of cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin. LÄS MER
4. New Tools for Analysis of Wood and Pulp Components - Application of MALDI-TOF Mass Spectroscopy and Capillary Zone Electrophoresis
Sammanfattning : In the present thesis, capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE),matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight massspectroscopy (MALDI-MS) and size-exclusion chromatography incombination with off-line MALDI-MS (SEC/MALDI-MS) have beenapplied successfully to the analysis of wood and pulpcomponents. The carbohydrate compositions of pulp and holocellulosesamples, as well as of isolated hemicellulose preparations, were determined employing enzymatic hydrolysis and subsequentanalysis of the saccharides released by CZE. 5. Fundamental Aspects of Lignin Carbohydrate Complexes (LCC) : Mechanisms, Recalcitrance and Material concepts
Sammanfattning : Covalent bonds between lignin and carbohydrates, forming a matrix referred to as lignin carbohydrate complexes (LCC), remain one of the most controversial topics in wood chemistry. A key issue is whether they are formed during chemical and mechanical pretreatments of the compact wood structure or actually present in wood prior to isolation. LÄS MER
