21. Clinical studies of asthma phenotypes focusing on the role of the leukotrienes
Sammanfattning : Inflammation in the airways in connection to asthma is a complex phenomenon and the mechanisms underlying the associated clinical symptoms involve the interaction of many different kinds of cells and mediators, giving rise to different phenotypes. The aim of the present thesis was to investigate the molecular and cellular mechanisms that results in two of these phenotypes, i. LÄS MER
22. Studies of leukotriene C4 synthase isoenzymes and the cysteinyl leukotrine receptors in human endothelial- and mast cells
Sammanfattning : Leukotriene (LT) C4, the parent compound of LTD4 and LTE4, is generated when LTA4 is conjugated with GSH by either leukotriene C4 synthase (LTC4S) or microsomal GSH S-transferase (MGST) type 2 or 3. Together these lipid mediators cause contractions particularly in airway smooth muscle and the microcirculation, leading to bronchconstriction, plasma extravasation and edema formation as well as increased mucus secretion from epithelial cells and recruitment of inflammatory cells. 23. Signaling and regulation of cysteinyl leukotriene receptors in intestinal epithelial cells and colon cancer
Sammanfattning : Colorectal cancer is the third most common type of cancer, and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the Western world. Chronic inflammation, such as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), increases the risk of cancer. Cysteinyl leukotrienes are pro-inflammatory mediators that are involved in IBD. LÄS MER
24. Involvement of eicosanoid signalling in epithelial cell migration
Sammanfattning : The development of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) and colon cancer (CC) has been shown to involve the up-regulation of inflammatory mediators and the machinery producing them such as the eicosanoids. Changes in the expression of extracellular matrix proteins and their related integrin receptors have also been shown to be important in the advancement IBD and CC. LÄS MER
25. An experimental study of mediators in allergic bronchoconstriction with focus on eicosanoids
Sammanfattning : Mast cells have a central role in the inflammatory response in airways of both atopic and non-atopic asthmatics. The mast cell-derived mediators such as histamine, leukotriene C4 and prostaglandin D2, released upon activation of the cell, produce acute bronchoconstriction that is characteristic of the early asthmatic response (EAR), and contribute to the development of airway inflammation and hyperresponsiveness following the initial reaction.
