  1. 1. Diagnosing hyper- and hypocortisolism using saliva samples : pitfalls and how to avoid them

    Författare :Nils Bäcklund; Per Dahlqvist; Göran Brattsand; Tommy Olsson; Elisabeth Aardal; Kerstin Landin-Wilhelmsen; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Cushing s syndrome; Adrenal Insufficiency; Salivary cortisol; Salivary cortisone; Reference intervals; Diagnostic accuracy; Error sources; invärtesmedicin; Internal Medicine; medicinsk biokemi; Medical Biochemistry;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Cushing's syndrome (CS) is caused by high cortisol secretion whereas insufficient cortisol secretion is called adrenal insufficiency (AI). Both are rare diseases with substantial diagnostic delay, and high morbidity and mortality even though effective treatment is available. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Functional Characterization of Tyrosine Transporters in fibroblast from Healthy Controls and Schizophrenic Patients

    Författare :Ravi Vumma; Nikolaos Venizelos; Örebro universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Fibroblasts; Schizophrenia; Precursor of Dopamine; Biological Transport; Active cellphysiology; Tyrosine and alanine transport; System-L; LAT1; LAT2; LAT3; LAT4; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Internal medicine; Invärtesmedicin; Neurology; Neurologi; Neurology; Neurologi;

    Sammanfattning : Cultured human fibroblasts offer an advantageous system to investigate the amino acid transport properties without confounding the affects of disease state and its treatment in many systemic psychiatric disorders. In previous studies, fibroblast cells have been used to investigate the tyrosine transport across plasma membranes in patients with schizophrenia and autism with out characterizing the particular amino acid transporters. Sammanfattning : Up to 100 million people travel annually from industrialized countries to resource-limited ones. Each traveller contains an internal ecosystem composed of tens of trillions of microbes, known as the intestinal microbiota, which has a large effect on health. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Brain function and glucocorticoids in obesity and type 2 diabetes including effects of lifestyle interventions

    Författare :Andreas Stomby; Tommy Olsson; Mats Ryberg; Carl-Johan Boraxbekk; Alasdair MacLullich; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Obesity; type 2 diabetes; glucocorticoid; cortisol; 11beta hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1; episodic memory; functional magnetic resonance imaging; paleolithic diet; exercise; Internal Medicine; invärtesmedicin; medicin; Medicine;

    Sammanfattning : Background Obesity and associated metabolic dysregulation are linked to impaired cognitive function and alterations in brain structure, which increases the risk of age-related dementia. Increased glucocorticoid (GC) exposure may be a potential mediator of these negative effects on the brain. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Diabetes in Young Adults : Remission, β-cell function and markers of inflammation

    Författare :Anna Schölin; Elisabeth Björk; Anders Karlsson; Jan Åman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Internal medicine; type 1 diabetes; young adults; remission; β-cell function; islet antibodies; gender; CRP; Invärtesmedicin; Internal medicine; Invärtesmedicin; Internal Medicine; invärtesmedicin;

    Sammanfattning : Type 1 diabetes is caused by immuno-mediated β-cell destruction leading to insulin deficiency and hyperglycaemia. The decline in β-cell function and the clinical course after diagnosis vary. Whether the process of destruction of the β-cells is associated with markers of a non-specific inflammatory response is unknown. LÄS MER
