21. Translational and clinical aspects of pancreatic cancer
Sammanfattning : Pancreatic cancer is a disease with dismal prognosis due to late detection and ineffective treatments. The majority of the patients already have disseminated disease at the time of diagnosis. The only potential curative treatment, surgery, is extensive with high morbidity and non-ignorable mortality. 22. Effects of mercury and fluoride on human immune cells : elucidation of mechanisms
Sammanfattning : Mercury, from dental amalgam, and fluoride, administered to prevent dental caries, have been argued to cause adverse health effects. The aims of this thesis have been to examine in what manner the fluoride and mercuric ions interact with human immune cells and, in the case of mercury, if it would be possible to monitor a tentative in vivo effect by in vitro assays. 23. Strategies to enhance the potency of HIV-1 DNA vaccines
Sammanfattning : Despite 30 years of intense research on HIV/AIDS, we have yet to arrive at a prophylactic vaccine that confers complete protection. This mission is complicated by the virus’s vast genetic variability and its ability to mask the targets for neutralizing antibodies. LÄS MER
24. Aspects on the cytokine load in trauma with special reference to blood components and local versus systemic cytokine activity
Sammanfattning : Cytokines and their inhibitors are thought to be involved in many of the pathophysiological changes associated with trauma and infection. Therapeutic measures such as transfusion of blood components could have a bearing on the systemic cytokine load in these conditions. LÄS MER
25. Modulation of invariant NKT cell activity by cytokines and receptors in human disease
Sammanfattning : Invariant natural killer T (NKT) cells are innate-like lymphocytes with both immunoregulatory and cytotoxic functions that play a role as activators and regulators of the immune response in many diseases. NKT cells are believed to bridge the innate and adaptive immune systems by rapidly producing large quantities of cytokines after recognition of CD1d-presented lipid antigens. LÄS MER
