16. Urban Sweden : changes in the distribution of population
Sammanfattning : In the 1960s and the early 1970s a lively discussion took place in Sweden about the role of the metropolitan areas in the urbanization process. The debate disclosed our limited knowledge of the spatial anatomy of urban Sweden; it became obvious that a better understanding of the pattern of population change in both metropolitan and in non-metropolitan areas was needed. 17. ß2 integrin-induced signal transduction events in human neutrophils
Sammanfattning : Inflammation is a localized protective response in vascularized tissues and can be induced by microbial infection or cell and tissue injury. Polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) are the most common white blood cells and are recognized as major cellular mediators of acute inflammation. LÄS MER
18. Regulation of neutrophil apoptosis
Sammanfattning : The human neutrophil is the most abundant granulocyte and the major type of cell involved in an acute inflammatory response. Neutrophils are armed with various systems of enzymes, that can find and kill pathogens, but unfortunately, these "weapons" cannot distinguish between the host tissues and the "invaders. LÄS MER
19. Mesenchymal stem cells for repair of the peripheral and central nervous system
Sammanfattning : Bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) have been shown to provide neuroprotection after transplantation into the injured nervous system. The present thesis investigates whether adult human and rat MSC differentiated along a Schwann cell lineage could increase their expression of neurotrophic factors and promote regeneration after transplantation into the injured peripheral nerve and spinal cord. 20. The muscle cytoskeleton of mice and men : Structural remodelling in desmin myopathies
Sammanfattning : The muscle fibre cytoskeleton of skeletal and heart muscle cells is composed mainly of intermediate filaments (IFs), that surround the myofibrils and connect the peripheral myofibrils with the sarcolemma and the nuclear membrane. Desmin is the first muscle specific IF protein to be produced in developing muscles and is the main IF protein in mature muscles. LÄS MER
