1. Hepatitis B virus RNA in serum and liver tissue - quantification using digital PCR
Sammanfattning : Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a global health issue that is responsible for approximately 900,000 deaths each year, by inducing liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). A few markers are used to classify HBV infection and monitor treatment efficacy, including HBV DNA, surface antigen (HBsAg) and e antigen (HBeAg) in serum as well as HBV DNA and RNA in liver tissue. 2. Hepatitis B virus infection and genomic changes from a long-term perspective
Sammanfattning : Hepatitis B virus is a non-cytopathic virus with a small, circular, partially double-stranded DNA of 3.2 kb. It causes acute and chronic inflammatory liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Retesting of stored sera from an outbreak of acute hepatitis in 1969-72 allowed identification of 126 cases of acute hepatitis B. LÄS MER
3. Structure and Dynamics of the Hepatitis B Virus Encapsidation Signal Revealed by NMR Spectroscopy
Sammanfattning : This thesis describes the study of the three-dimensional structure and dynamics of the hepatitis B virus (HBV) encapsidation signal, epsilon, by means of nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and mutational data. HBV replicates by reverse transcription of an RNA pregenome into the viral DNA genome, which becomes enclosed in viral particles (encapsidation). LÄS MER
4. Prevalance and prevention of sexually transmitted viral infections in the Bolivian Amazonas
Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates the prevalence of sexually transmitted viral infections in women living in the Amazonas region of Bolivia and explores whether Bolivian medical plants can affect the immune system and prevent or treat infections with Herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) and inflammation. My PhD project was financed by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA), and I did my work alternately in Bolivia and in Sweden. LÄS MER
5. Building a coherent hydro-climatic modelling framework for the data limited Kilombero Valley of Tanzania
Sammanfattning : This thesis explores key aspects for synthesizing data across spatiotemporal scales relevant for water resources management in an Eastern Africa context. Specifically, the potential of large scale global precipitation datasets (GPDs) in data limited regions to overcome spatial and temporal data gaps is considered. LÄS MER
