  1. 1. A Utopian Quest for Universal Knowledge : Diachronic Histories of Botanical Collections between the Sixteenth Century and the Present

    Författare :Anna Svensson; Sabine Höhler; Peder Roberts; Sverker Sörlin; Dániel Margócsy; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; history of botany; utopia; Oxford University Botanic Garden; pressed plants in books; botanical collection; classification; herbarium; Global Plants; digitisation; database; conservation; natural dyeing; botanikhistoria; utopi; Oxford University Botanic Garden; pressade växter i böcker; botaniska samlingar; klassifikation; herbarium; Global Plants; digitalisering; databas; växtfärgning; Historiska studier av teknik; vetenskap och miljö; History of Science; Technology and Environment;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis explores the history of botany as a global collection-based science by tracing parallels between utopian traditions and botanical collecting, from their sixteenth-century beginnings to the present. A range of botanical collections, such as gardens, herbaria and classification systems, have played a central role in the struggle to discover a global or universal scientific order for the chaotic, diverse and locally shaped kingdom of plants. 2. 2. Methane dynamics in northern wetlands: Significance of vascular plants

    Författare :Anna Joabsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aquatic ecology; marine biology; Hydrobiology; Växtekologi; Plant ecology; climate change; arctic wetlands; northern wetlands; plant-microbe interactions; methane emission; vascular plants; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi; akvatisk ekologi; Ecology; Ekologi;

    Sammanfattning : The studies presented in Papers I to VI illustrate several different aspects of the impact of vascular plants on methane emissions from northern natural wetlands. The subject has been approached on different scales, ranging from the study of microbial substrates in the vicinity of a single plant root, to an attempt to extrapolate some of the results to the entire northern hemisphere north of 50°N. 3. 3. Biodiversity patterns and the processes regulating them along elevation gradients in the Swedish mountains

    Författare :Johannes Måsviken; Love Dalén; Anne Bjorkman; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; biodiversity; elevation gradients; spiders; insects; plants; latitude; altitude; alpha diversity; beta diversity; taxonomic diversity; phylogenetic diversity; functional diversity; Systematic Zoology; zoologisk systematik och evolutionsforskning;

    Sammanfattning : Biodiversity describes the total variation of life and includes the taxonomic, genetic, and phenotypic differences among organisms. Variations of biodiversity in space and time may be driven by ecological, evolutionary, or neutral processes. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Desert Plants and Deserted Islands : Systematics and Ethnobotany in Caryophyllaceae

    Författare :Anneleen Kool; Mats Thulin; Gudrun Kadereit; Uppsala universitet; []

    Sammanfattning : Background. Caryophyllaceae is a large and cosmopolitic flowering plant family, however the systematics of many of its basal groups has been unclear, due to a lack of unambiguous morphology. Some members of Caryophyllaceae are used medicinally, e.g. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Hydropower plants and power systems : Dynamic processes and control for stable and efficient operation

    Författare :Weijia Yang; Per Norrlund; Urban Lundin; Christophe Nicolet; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : As the largest global renewable source, hydropower shoulders a large portion of the regulation duty in many power systems. New challenges are emerging from variable renewable energy (VRE) sources, the increasing scale and complexity of hydropower plants (HPPs) and power grid. LÄS MER
