1. Utilization of Decomposition Techniques for Analyzing and Characterizing Flows
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents the utilization of two different decomposition techniques, proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) and dynamic mode decomposition (DMD), for enhanced understanding of flow structures and their stability. The advantages of these techniques are shown for a range of flow situations, most of which are turbulent. LÄS MER
2. Linear and non-linear dynamics of non-autonomous flows
Sammanfattning : Fluid flows subject to time-dependent external forces or boundary conditions are ubiquitous in biology and technical applications. Whether one considers birds flying by flapping their wings or the gust response of wind turbines, the flow is non-autonomous. LÄS MER
3. Modeling and Characterization of nonlinear Materials for Protection of Optical Sensors
Sammanfattning : This thesis concerns nonlinear materials and experimental techniques for optical power limiting applications. Theoretical models to analyze and simulate related measurements were studied. Two different numerical modeling tools for propagation of optical radiation through optically nonlinear media were developed. LÄS MER
4. Detailed Numerical Simulations of Turbulent Premixed Flames at Moderate and High Karlovitz Numbers
Sammanfattning : In generally accepted and applied flamelet combustion models, a turbulent flame is mainly assumed distorted by the large-scale turbulence eddies, whereas small-scale turbulence effects on the local flamelet structures are neglected. However, in a lot of industrial applications rather high turbulent intensities are often imposed, which induce turbulence scales at ranges smaller than the flame thickness. LÄS MER
5. Structural Control and Identification of Civil Engineering Structures
Sammanfattning : In general, the main purpose of a structural control system is to apply powerful control techniques that improve the behaviour of civil structures under various kinds of dynamic loading. The first part of this thesis presents novel applications of posicast and input shaping control schemes that have never previously been applied in the field of structural control. LÄS MER
