1. In the service of the European Union : The role of the presidency in negotiating the Amsterdam Treaty 1995-97
Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates the role and influence of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers in European Union negotiations - to what extent the Presidency can actually exert leadership and to what extent the office-holder can advance national priorities. The study addresses these questions by examining the activities and achievements of the Spanish, Italian, Irish and Dutch presidencies in the prenegotiation and negotiation processes in the intergovernmental conference (IGC) 1996-97, which resulted in the Amsterdam Treaty. 2. Negotiating Asylum. The EU acquis, Extraterritorial Protection and the Common Market of Deflection
Sammanfattning : How are access to asylum and other forms of extraterritorial protection regulated in the European Union? Is the EU acquis in these areas in conformity with international law? What tools does international law offer to solve conflicts between them? And, finally, is law capable of bridging the foundational oppositions embedded in migration and asylum issues? This work combines the potential of legal formalism with an analytical framework drawing on political theory. It analyses the argumentative strategies used by international lawyers, exploiting the interpretative methodology of international law as well as elaborate discrimination arguments. LÄS MER
3. "Soy cocinera y camarero". La variación en el nombramiento de las mujeres profesionales en España
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this dissertation is to generate a theory explaining the variation in the way the Spaniards, particularly the Spanish women, designate female professionals. Three different studies are included, the first one a quantitative survey on how the use of the three main strategies for referring to female professionals (the feminine: la abogada; the common gender: la abogado; lexical modification: mujer abogado) is determined by the sex, the age and the educational level of the speakers.
