6. Statistical Mechanical Studies of Aqueous solutions and Biomolecular Systems
Sammanfattning : This thesis is concerned with theoretical studies of aqueous solutions and biomolecular systems. Part of the present work is to understand equilibrium solvent and solute properties, while the other part is to study processes that occur in these solutions. LÄS MER
7. Statistical Mechanical Studies of Titrating Polyelectrolytes
Sammanfattning : Different models and statistical mechanical approximations for titrating polyelectrolytes are studied and the results compared with Monte Carlo simulations and experimental data. Three types of models have been used in the simulations: i) rigid structures and freely jointed chains with ii) rigid bonds and iii) flexible, harmonic bonds. LÄS MER
8. Molecular Recognition in Antibody Engineering. Studies on recombinant and phage displayed antibodies
Sammanfattning : In vitro generation of antibody fragments of desired specificity and affinity plays an important role since it permits the generation of reagents which may be valuable for diagnostic and therapeutic applications. Furthermore, the kinetic parameters for an antibody-antigen interaction, rather than the affinity, has shown to correlate with biological functions like virus neutralization. LÄS MER
9. Photochemistry of Phenyl Halides
Sammanfattning : We have studied fundamental aspects of photo-induced dissociation kinetics and dynamics in several phenyl halides. By combining femtosecond pump-probe measurements with ab initio calculations we are able to account for several observations. LÄS MER
10. Macrolide Antibiotics in Bacterial Protein Synthesis
Sammanfattning : Macrolides are a large group of clinically relevant antibiotics that inhibit protein synthesis by binding to the large ribosomal subunit in the peptide exit tunnel, close to the peptidyl transferase center (PTC). We have shown that the peptide length of the resulting peptidyl-tRNA drop-off products is proportional to the distance between the PTC and the respective macrolide in the tunnel. LÄS MER
