  1. 1. Force measurements using scanning probe microscopy : Applications to advanced powder processing

    Författare :Anders Meurk; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :atomic force microscope; AFM; SPM; van der Waals interaction; DLVO-theory; surface forces; colloidal probe; force curve; friction; adhesion; stick-slip; cantilever; calibration; spring constant; silicon nitride; iron; silica;

    Sammanfattning : The object of this thesis is to apply scanning probemicroscopy (SPM) to the field of advanced powder processing.Measurement of interparticle surface forces at conditionsrelevant to ceramic processing has been performed together withthorough studies of powder friction. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Steric Stabilization of Polylactide particles achieved by Covalent 'grafting-from' with Hydrophilic Polymers

    Författare :Robertus Wahyu Nayan Nugroho; Ann-Christine Albertsson; Karin Odelius; Anders Höglund; Mark Rutland; Martina Janstål; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :Steric stabilization; AFM; hydrophilicity; surface modification; poly lactide ; acrylamide; acrylic acid; maleic anhydride;

    Sammanfattning : Despite numerous advantages of using particles in a wide range of applications, they have one drawback that is their tendency to agglomerate. One way to overcome this problem is to sterically  stabilize the particles by introducing polymeric  chains covalently attached to the surface. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Interfacial properties of calcium montmorillonite in aqueous solutions : Density functional theory and classical molecular dynamics studies on the electric double layer

    Författare :Guomin Yang; Göran Lindbergh; Ivars Neretnieks; Michael Holmboe; Jan Forsman; KTH; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Clay minerals; Bentonite; density functional theory; molecular dynamics; GROMACS; electric double layer; electrolytes; ionic liquids; primitive model; CLAYFF forcefield.; Chemical Engineering; Kemiteknik;

    Sammanfattning : The swelling properties of Bentonite are highly affected by clay content and the clay-water interactions that arise from the ion distribution in the diffuse double layer formed near the charged montmorillonite (or smectite) surfaces. Existing continuum models describing the electric double layers, such as classical Poisson-Boltzmann and DLVO theory, ignore the ion-ion correlations, which are especially important for multivalent ions at high surface charge and ionic strength. 4. 4. Self-organization of nanoparticles - implications for interface biology

    Författare :Anders Lundgren; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Gold nanoparticles; self-organization; self-assembly; nanostructure; nanopatterns; cell surface interactions; chemical gradients;

    Sammanfattning : Cells bind to their surroundings via proteins displayed on the cell surface. These interactions support the cells and are important for many cellular processes, e.g. cell migration during morphogenesis, wound healing and cancer metastasis. LÄS MER
