  1. 16. A Surface Phase Model of the Alveolar Lining: Ultrastructural Analysis and in vivo Applications

    Författare :Marcus Larsson; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; X-ray diffraction; cryo-TEM; dynamic swelling; ARDS; surface phase; surfactant replacement therapy; cholesterol; minimal surface; pulmonary surfactant; alveolar surface; Physiology; Fysiologi;

    Sammanfattning : In this thesis the relation between lung surfactant structure and functional properties have been studied. Experimental results show that the alveolar surface is formed by a coherent surface phase with a structure equal to tubular myelin. The properties of this phase may explain certain unresolved issues in lung physiology, e.g. LÄS MER

  2. 17. Nanosized Bilayer Disks as Model Membranes for Interaction Studies

    Författare :Anna Lundquist; Katarina Edwards; Marja-Liisa Riekkola; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Disk; disc; lipid bilayer; PEG-lipid; model membrane; interaction; partitioning; drug; liposome; cryo-TEM; neutron scattering; capillary electrophoresis; immobilization; biosensor; membrane protein; melittin; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Sammanfattning : PEG-lipid stabilized bilayer disks have been found in lipid mixtures containing polyethylene glycol (PEG)-lipids where the combination of a high bending rigidity and low PEG-lipid/lipid miscibility favours disk formation. The disks are planar and circular in shape and their long-term stability is excellent. LÄS MER

  3. 18. Development and Evaluation of Lipodisks Intended for Use as Biomimetic Membranes and Drug Carriers

    Författare :Malin Morin Zetterberg; Katarina Edwards; Jonas Bergquist; Ana Maria Carmona-Ribeiro; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; model membranes; drug delivery; drug partitioning; antimicrobial peptides; nanocarriers; cryo-TEM; polymer-stabilized bilayer disks; Chemistry with specialization in Physical Chemistry; Kemi med inriktning mot fysikalisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : Polyethylene glycol-stabilized lipodisks have emerged as a novel type of lipid-based nanoparticles with high potential as both drug carriers and biomimetic membranes. In this thesis we assess both of these applications, and show how the properties of the lipodisks can be further developed and optimized. LÄS MER

  4. 19. Physico-Chemical Investigations of Bilayer Discs and Related Lipid Structures Formed in Liposomal Systems Intended for Triggered Release

    Författare :Maria Sandström; Katarina Edwards; Mats Almgren; Tommy Nylander; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Physical chemistry; liposome; triggered release; pH-sensitive liposomes; temperature-sensitive liposomes; drug partitioning; cryo-TEM; discs; Fysikalisk kemi;

    Sammanfattning : This thesis describes results from fundamental studies of liposomes intended for drug delivery and pH or temperature triggered release. In addition, the effect of lipid composition on bilayer disc formation and a potential application of the bilayer discs were investigated. LÄS MER

  5. 20. A Waterborne Colloidal Model System Consisting of Fluorinated Spheres Bearing Grafted PEG: Synthesis, Characterization and Properties

    Författare :Jeanette Ulama; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; colloidal model system; steric stabilization; core-shell; poly ethylene glycol PEG ; heptafluorobutyl methactylate HFBMA ; fluorinated; polymer; phase behavior; short-range attractions; semi-batch emulsion polymerization; small angle X-ray scattering SAXS ; smearing effects; dynamic light scattering DLS ; cryogenic-transmission electron microscopy cryo-TEM ;

    Sammanfattning : Model systems have expanded our knowledge of numerous phenomena in Colloid Science, such as the appearance of glasses, order-disorder transitions involving crystals and attraction induced formation of gels. So far, the existing colloidal model systems have been limited mainly to nonaqueous media. LÄS MER
