Sammanfattning : Churches in two Estonian counties - Ösel-Wiek and Jerwen - have very many similar features with churches in Gotland. In earlier scientific researches these similarities in styles were explained by the artistic ambitions of single travelling masons, the present research emphasizes the political and artistic preferences of those who ordered the buildings to be built and who financed them. Sammanfattning : This thesis investigates the Annunciation motif and the use of images in a medieval socio-cultural context. There are almost 400 medieval images of the Annunciation from the period 1150–1550 in Sweden today. It is found in murals, baptismal fonts, paintings, wooden sculpture, stone reliefs, liturgical vessels, textile works and altarpieces. LÄS MER

Sammanfattning : This dissertation deals with the ideology of martyrdom of the Hebrew Chronicles which were written in response to the persecutions of the Rhineland Jews during the First Crusade in 1096. The Chronicles describe how thousands of Jews died, some of whom were killed by the crusaders, others killed each other or committed suicide rather than being forcibly baptized or killed by the crusaders. 5. Between Old and New Rome : Armenian and Bulgarian Contacts with the Papacy around 1204
Sammanfattning : The aim of this thesis is to examine the use of symbolic power at the establishment of the Second Bulgarian Empire and the Cilician kingdom of Armenia, and to further explore and discuss problems of language, translation, ethnography, legitimacy, culture and distinctions between “East” and “West” through these cases. Despite their geographical distance and diverse histories, these regions are united through a past of Byzantine domination and by their entering into unions with the Roman Papacy at this time. LÄS MER
