6. Evolutionary and Pharmacological Studies of NPY and QRFP Receptors
Sammanfattning : The neuropeptide Y (NPY) system consists of 3-4 peptides and 4-7 receptors in vertebrates. It has powerful effects on appetite regulation and is involved in many other biological processes including blood pressure regulation, bone formation and anxiety. LÄS MER
7. The Role of Microvascular Pericytes in the Generation of Pro-fibrotic Connective Tissue Cells : Investigations in vitro and in Reactive Tissues in vivo
Sammanfattning : Pericytes are cells of mesenchymal origin located on the abluminal side, juxtapositioned to the endothelial cells in capillaries, venules and small arterioles. They are important for maintaining vessel integrity in resting tissues as well as the formation and stabilization of new vessels. LÄS MER
8. The cell cycle of the hyperthermophilic archaeal genus Sulfolobus
Sammanfattning : The third domain of life, Archaea is one of the three main evolutionary lineages together with the Bacteria and the Eukarya domains. The archaea are, despite their prokaryotic cell organisation, more closely related to eukaryotes than to bacteria in terms of the informational pathways (DNA replication, transcription and translation). 9. Models of Retinal Development and Disease
Sammanfattning : For a model of a human disease to be valid and useful, it is important that key genotypic and phenotypic traits are shared between model system and human. The work in this thesis has been focused on generating new and characterizing spontaneous models of three genetic disorders affecting the retina: retinoblastoma, a childhood cancer with its origin in the fetal retina, Stargardt disease, a juvenile form of macular degeneration, and Bardet-Biedl syndrome, a pleiotropic ciliopathy featuring retinal degeneration. 10. Downstream effects of master regulators in two brain diseases
Sammanfattning : In paper one, we investigated how the pharmacological activation and inhibition of the glucocorticoid system affects lifespan and symptoms in a mouse model for RTT. We performed a long-term drug treatment study with the GR activator corticosterone and the GR inhibitor RU486 under which we measured the lifespan and onset of RTT-like symptoms of male Mecp2-null and female Mecp2 heterozygous mice in comparison to untreated mutant and to treated and untreated wild-type animals.
