16. Studies of transforming growth factor alpha in normal and abnormal growth
Sammanfattning : Regulation of growth is of fundamental importance for development of the organism and to maintain health. The induction of cell proliferation and matrix production are influenced by several different signaling systems, most importantly by growth factors. LÄS MER
17. The role of gamma-tubulin in cell division and cancer
Sammanfattning : Although cancer is a heterogeneous disease, a common theme in tumor cells is the deregulation of cell division, which renders tumor progression independent of otherwise necessary internal or external growth cues. This may provide cancer cells with the ability to divide indefinitely, posing a threat to the rest of the organism. LÄS MER
18. Exploiting Drosophila as a model system for studying anaplastic lymphoma kinase in vivo
Sammanfattning : Anaplastic Lymphoma Kinase (ALK) is a Receptor Tyrosine Kinase (RTK) and an oncogene associated with several human diseases, but its normal function in humans and other vertebrates is unclear. Drosophila melanogaster has an ALK homolog, demonstrating that the RTK has been conserved throughout evolution. LÄS MER
19. Novel sites of A-to-I RNA editing in the mammalian brain
Sammanfattning : The number of protein-coding genes are likely not sufficient to account for the complexity of higher organisms. It is plausible that the proteome is responsible for the complexity of an organism. LÄS MER
20. Identification and characterisation of chitin and cellulose synthases in oomycetes : New tools for biochemical studies and structure determination
Sammanfattning : Despite resembling ‘true’ fungi in terms of morphological features, oomycetes form a distinct eukaryotic lineage of filamentous microorganisms that belongs to the stramenopiles, a group of protists also comprising the closely-related brown algae and diatoms. Many oomycetes are devastating pathogens of plants and animals, globally causing significant economic losses in the agriculture and aquaculture industries, and posing considerable environmental damage to natural ecosystems.
