  1. 1. Artery Wall Imaging and Effects of Postmenopausal Estrogen Therapy

    Författare :Kenny A. Rodriguez-Macias Wallberg; Tord Naessén; Lars-Åke Mattsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Medicine; artery wall thickness; tunica media; tunica intima; arterial stiffness; carotid; aorta; cardiovascular disease; atherosclerosis; menopause; estrogen; hormone therapy; ultrasound; Medicin; Dermatology and venerology; clinical genetics; internal medicine; Dermatologi och venerologi; klinisk genetik; invärtesmedicin;

    Sammanfattning : Postmenopausal estrogen therapy, initiated early in the menopause, seems to protect against development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. This thesis concerns studies of artery wall thickness and arterial stiffness estimated by noninvasive ultrasound techniques in long-term estrogen treated postmenopausal women who initiated therapy at the time of the menopause. 2. 2. Ultrasound measurements of subclinical carotid atherosclerosis : methodological and clinical studies

    Författare :Emma Nyman; Christer Grönlund; Ulf Näslund; Isabel Gonçalves; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; atherosclerosis; ultrasound; carotid artery; carotid intima media thickness; carotid plaque; reproducibility; intervention; echogenicity; cardiovascular disease; hjärt- och kärlforskning;

    Sammanfattning : Ultrasound measurements of subclinical carotid atherosclerosis have been evaluated as an additional parameter in risk evaluation of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). The overall aim of this thesis was to increase knowledge regarding ultrasound measurements of subclinical carotid atherosclerosis. LÄS MER

  3. 3. Ultrasonic Methods for Quantitative Carotid Plaque Characterization

    Författare :Erik Widman; Matilda Larsson; Mark L. Palmeri; KTH; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Atherosclerosis; Cardiovascular Disease; Carotid Artery; Elasticity; ex vivo; in vivo; Phantom; Plaque; Polyvinyl Alcohol; Pulse Wave Imaging; Shear Wave Elastography; Speckle Tracking; Stroke; Ultrasound; Medical Technology; Medicinsk teknologi; Atherosclerosis;

    Sammanfattning : Cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of death worldwide and improved diagnostic methods are needed for early intervention and to select the most suitable treatment for patients. Currently, carotid artery plaque vulnerability is typically determined by visually assessing ultrasound B-mode images, which is influenced by user-subjectivity. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Ultrasound Image Analysis for Automated Classification of Atherosclerotic Plaque in the Human Carotid Artery

    Författare :Peter Holdfeldt; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Nyckelord :TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; classification; dynamic programming; carotid artery; Java program; image segmentation; ultrasound images; intima-media thickness; atherosclerotic plaque;

    Sammanfattning : Cardiovascular diseases, caused by atherosclerosis, is one of the most common causes of death in the industrialized world. Two risk factors, that both can be assessed with ultrasound, are the Intima-Media Thickness (IMT) in the arterial wall and the composition of the atherosclerotic plaque. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Carotid calcifications in panoramic radiographs in relation to carotid stenosis

    Författare :Maria Garoff; Jan Ahlqvist; Eva Levring Jäghagen; Per Wester; Kostas Tsiklakis; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; carotid stenosis; panoramic radiography; calcification; atherosclerosis; odontologi; Odontology;

    Sammanfattning : Calcifications in carotid atheromas can be detected in a panoramic radiograph (PR) of the jaws. A carotid artery calcification (CAC) can indicate presence of significant (≥ 50%) carotid stenosis (SCS). LÄS MER
