  1. 1. Aspects of Tuberculosis and HIV Coinfection in Patients at Ethiopian Health Centers

    Författare :Sten Skogmar; Enheten för infektionssjukdomar; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; HIV; TB; clinical scoring; TB screening; CD4 cell count; immunosuppression; immune activation;

    Sammanfattning : HIV and tuberculosis (TB) remain the two most common infectious causes of death worldwide. During the recent decade antiretroviral treatment (ART) has become available for millions of people living with HIV (PLHIV) globally; yet more than half of PLHIV have not yet initiated ART. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Microfluidics in Surface Modified PDMS : Towards Miniaturized Diagnostic Tools

    Författare :Sara Thorslund; Fredrik Nikolajeff; Jonas Bergquist; Elisabeth Verpoorte; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Materials science; µTAS; micro total analysis system; PDMS; poly dimethylsiloxane ; microfluidics; heparin; blood filtration; on-chip; ESI-MS; desalting; QCM-D; biocompatible; CD4; capillary flow; lab-on-chip; microfabrication; enrichment; point-of-care; hydrophilic; oxidation; Materialvetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : There is a strong trend in fabricating miniaturized total analytical systems, µTAS, for various biochemical and cell biology applications. These miniaturized systems could e.g. gain better separation performances, be faster, consume less expensive reagents and be used for studies that are difficult to access in the macro world. LÄS MER

  3. 3. The central role of the CD4 T-helper cell in HIV infection : analysis of cell mediated responses and CCR-5 genotypes in HIV-1 infected individuals

    Författare :Ann-Charlotte Leandersson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is characterized by progressive immunologic dysregulation. The main target of HIV is the CD4 cell resulting in malfunction of the immune system, with a decline in CD4 cells and subsequent development of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). LÄS MER

  4. 4. Sarcoidosis : expression of cell regulatory markers and the influence of patient phenotype on bronchoalveolar lavage cell differential counts

    Författare :Muntasir Abo Al Hayja; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :;

    Sammanfattning : Sarcoidosis is a systemic inflammatory disease that can affect almost any organ, but the respiratory system is affected in more than 90% of the cases. To elicit an immune response, an antigen(s) is processed by antigen-presenting cells (APCs), e.g. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Immune activation during HIV-1 infection : implication for B cell dysfunctions and therapy monitoring

    Författare :Angelo De Milito; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Nyckelord :HIV; B cell memory; hypergammaglobulinemia; immune activation; Fas-FasL; CD27-CD70;

    Sammanfattning : Aberrant activation of cells of the immune system plays a major role in the pathogenesis of HIV infection. The major aims of the thesis were: (a) to measure the effects of current antiretroviral therapy on immune activation through the analysis of soluble activation markers; (b) to evaluate the extent of T and B cell immune activation in relation to immunological and virological parameters; (c) to analyse the T-B cell molecular pathway leading to hyperactivation of B cells and loss of B cell function.
