1. The central role of the CD4 T-helper cell in HIV infection : analysis of cell mediated responses and CCR-5 genotypes in HIV-1 infected individuals
Sammanfattning : Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is characterized by progressive immunologic dysregulation. The main target of HIV is the CD4 cell resulting in malfunction of the immune system, with a decline in CD4 cells and subsequent development of the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). LÄS MER
2. Sarcoidosis : expression of cell regulatory markers and the influence of patient phenotype on bronchoalveolar lavage cell differential counts
Sammanfattning : Sarcoidosis is a systemic inflammatory disease that can affect almost any organ, but the respiratory system is affected in more than 90% of the cases. To elicit an immune response, an antigen(s) is processed by antigen-presenting cells (APCs), e.g. LÄS MER
3. Immune activation during HIV-1 infection : implication for B cell dysfunctions and therapy monitoring
Sammanfattning : Aberrant activation of cells of the immune system plays a major role in the pathogenesis of HIV infection. The major aims of the thesis were: (a) to measure the effects of current antiretroviral therapy on immune activation through the analysis of soluble activation markers; (b) to evaluate the extent of T and B cell immune activation in relation to immunological and virological parameters; (c) to analyse the T-B cell molecular pathway leading to hyperactivation of B cells and loss of B cell function. 4. Peripheral blood biomarkers of cell-specific autoimmunity. Studies in children at increased risk for type 1 diabetes
Sammanfattning : Objective While the incidence of children suffering from autoimmune type 1 diabetes (T1D) is increasing in Sweden and worldwide, the underlying etiology and cellular mechanisms behind this remain unknown. The predisposition of the high-risk HLA DR-DQ genotype and as yet unknown environmental triggers lead to autoimmunity and the onset of T1D, which is preceded by islet beta-cell autoantibodies acting as markers for ongoing autoimmunity. 5. Immunological and virologica response to antiretroviral treatment (art) in patients infected with different HIV-1 genetic subtypes
Sammanfattning : Genetic analyses of different strains of HIV- 1 have shown that isolates can be subdivided into groups, subtypes and circulating recombinant forms. Nine different genetic HIV-1 subtypes have been identified so far, named as A, B, C, D, F, G, H, J and K. LÄS MER
