  1. 1. Bacterioplankton in the Baltic Sea : influence of allochthonous organic matter and salinity

    Författare :Daniela Figueroa; Agneta Andersson; Laura Alonso-Saéz; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Bacterioplankton production; bacterial community structure; allochthonous organic matter; carbon utilization; dissolved organic carbon composition; bacterioplankton ecological function; bacterial diversity; bacterial network; Baltic Sea estuary; food web; climate change.; Environmental Science; miljövetenskap;

    Sammanfattning : Climate change is expected to increase the precipitation ~30% in higher latitudes during the next century, increasing the land runoff via rivers to aquatic ecosystems. The Baltic Sea will receive higher river discharges, accompanied by larger input of allochthonous dissolved organic matter (DOM) from terrestrial ecosystems. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Holocene environmental changes recorded by diatom stratigraphy in the southern Baltic Sea

    Författare :Elinor Andrén; Rick W. Batterbee; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; allmän och historisk geologi; General and Historical Geology;

    Sammanfattning : Sediment cores from the southern Baltic Sea and the Oder River estuary are analysed for their siliceous microfossil assemblages and organic carbon content. Long piston cores from the Bornholm and Gotland Basins provide data on the long-term Holocene history of the Baltic proper and serve as a natural background when evaluating the most recent environmental changes recorded in the short gravity cores. 3. 3. Phytoplankton drivers in a marine system influenced by allochthonous organic matter – the Baltic Sea

    Författare :Joanna Paczkowska; Agneta Andersson; Owen Rowe; Harri Kuosa; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; phytoplankton; nutrients; allochthonous organic matter; humic substances; structuring factors;

    Sammanfattning : Climate change scenarios predict that seawater temperature and precipitation will increase in the Baltic Sea region during the next century. In the northern part of the Baltic Sea, increasing inflows of the terrestrial allochthonous dissolved organic matter (ADOM) are expected to be a major consequence of elevated rainfall, which can alter light and nutrient availability for phytoplankton. 4. 4. Dispersal and environmental impact of contaminants in organic rich, fibrous sediments of industrial origin in the Baltic Sea

    Författare :Anna Apler; Ian Snowball; Karin Wiberg; Kevin Bishop; Sarah Josefsson; Lovisa Zillén; Ida-Maja Hassellöv; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fiberbank; fiber-rich sediments; metals; persistent organic pollutants; pore water; bottom water; dispersal; sorption; pulp and paper; Natural Resources and Sustainable Development; Naturresurser och hållbar utveckling;

    Sammanfattning : The health of the Baltic Sea is negatively affected by hazardous substances such as metals and persistent organic pollutants (POPs), which include legacy pollutants that were banned decades ago, but still circulate in the ecosystem. Elevated levels of legacy pollutants, identified by HELCOM as key hazardous substances, have been found in accumulations of fibrous sediments, so-called fiberbanks and fiber-rich sediments, which derive from old pulp mills along the Swedish north coast. 5. 5. Non-indigenous zooplankton : the role of predatory cladocerans and of copepods in trophic dynamics

    Författare :Marc Andersen Borg; Fredrik Wulff; Markku Viitasalo; Stockholms universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Acartia tonsa; Bythotrephes longimanus; Cercopagis pengoi; egg production; fitness; food web changes; ingestion rates; invasive species; metabolic balance; mortality; non-indigenous zooplankton; predation impact; salinity tolerance; stable isotopes; Marine ecology; Marin ekologi; marin ekologi; Marine Ecology;

    Sammanfattning : Human-mediated introductions of non-indigenous species now threaten to homogenize the biota of the Globe, causing huge economic and ecological damage. This thesis studies the ecological role of 3 invasive planktonic crustaceans, the omnivorous copepod Acartia tonsa (western Atlantic and Indo-Pacific) and the predatory cladocerans, Cercopagis pengoi (Ponto-Caspian) and Bythotrephes longimanus (Eurasian).
