1. Folate - Associations with breast cancer depending on intake, metabolism, genetic variation and estrogen receptor status
Sammanfattning : Folate is a B-vitamin that may influence cancer development via its role as methyl donor for DNA synthesis and methylation. Plant foods contain many bioactive compounds including folate and fiber. Results from the Malmö Diet and Cancer (MDC) cohort indicate lower breast cancer risk at high fiber intake. LÄS MER
2. Development of dementia in mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients with focus on B-vitamins
Sammanfattning : This thesis focused on the importance of low B-vitamins, hyperhomocysteinemia and the development of dementia and Alzheimer´s disease (AD) in patients with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The relation between vitamin B12 /folate and dementia has been extensively investigated, but the results are inconsistent. LÄS MER
3. The impact of homocysteine and B vitamins on Alzheimer’s disease, cognitive performance and structural brain changes
Sammanfattning : The overall aim of this thesis was to investigate the relation of homocysteine (tHcy), vitamin B12, and folate with Alzheimer’s disease (AD), cognitive performance, and structural brain changes in population-based studies of Finnish and Swedish elderly individuals. Study I. LÄS MER
4. Systems and Synthetic Biology: “Mining human gut microbial metabolism through in vitro and in silico approaches”
Sammanfattning : The human gut microbiome is a consequence of mutual co-evolutionary interaction between the eukaryotic and prokaryotic parts of the mammalian holobiont. Based on the environmental and dietary inputs, there is a succession of microorganisms living inside the human colon. LÄS MER
5. Lifestyle, biomarkers and the risk of developing inflammatory bowel disease
Sammanfattning : Introduction: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD), is a chronic disease causing inflammation in the gut mucosa. The pathogenesis involves alteration in gut microbiota and in the intestinal barrier due to genetic factors, environmental exposure and dysregulation of the immune response. LÄS MER
