  1. 1. Vitamin D deficiency in Northern Sweden : a cross-sectional study of an immigrant population at latitude 63° N, including an open partially randomized, controlled trial studying the effect of supplementation with different doses of cholecalciferol

    Författare :Lena Granlund; Eva Fhärm; Christer Andersson; Marie Lindkvist; Anna Ramnemark; Ingrid B Bergström; Umeå universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; vitamin D deficiency; 25-hydroxyvitamin D; cross-sectional study; immigrant; muscle strength; grip strength; anxiety; depression; health related quality of life; clinical trial; cholecalciferol; family medicine; allmänmedicin;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Vitamin D is a prohormone that plays a key role in the calcium and phosphate balance and has physiological functions throughout the entire body. Vitamin D is supplied by exposure to ultraviolet light or by food. The prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in immigrants in Northern Sweden was unknown. LÄS MER

  2. 2. Fibroblast growth factor-23 and Klotho in bone/mineral and parathyroid disorders

    Författare :Tijana Krajisnik; Tobias E. Larsson; Kenneth B. Jonsson; Östen Ljunggren; Peyman Björklund; Gunnar Sterner; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; calcitriol; chronic kidney disease; CKD; chronic renal failure; fibroblast growth factor 23; fibroblast growth factor-23; FGF23; FGF-23; GalNac-T3; GALNT3; GFR; hyperostosis-hyperphosphatemia syndrome; HHS; Klotho; parathyroid hormone; PTH; hyperparathyroidism; pHPT; sHPT; uremic; vitamin D3; Endocrinology; Endokrinologi; Internal Medicine; invärtesmedicin;

    Sammanfattning : Fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF23) is a novel, bone-produced hormone that regulates renal phosphate (Pi) reabsorption and calcitriol metabolism. Disorders of mineral and bone metabolism, such as autosomal dominant hypophosphatemic rickets (ADHR) and hyperostosis-hyperphosphatemia syndrome (HHS), witness the importance of well-balanced serum levels of FGF23. 3. 3. Vitamin B6 as a potential antioxidant : a study emanating from UV-B-stressed plants

    Författare :Mikael Ristilä; Åke Strid; Leif Eriksson; Éva Hideg; Örebro universitet; []
    Nyckelord :NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arabidopsis; UV-B irradiation; pyridoxine; vitamin B6; ROS; Chemistry; Kemi; Chemistry; Kemi;

    Sammanfattning : Increased influx of solar UV-B radiation (280-320 nm), due to a decreasing stratospheric ozone layer, impacts severely on plants. Some of the UV-B effects on plants are related to stress induced by produced reactive oxygen species (ROS). Pyridoxine (vitamin B6) has been reported to be a potential quencher of ROS. LÄS MER

  4. 4. Experimental studies on the effects of insulin-like growth factor I and glucocorticoids on bone metabolism

    Författare :Kenneth B. Jonsson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Nyckelord :Medical sciences; Bone; bone resorption; glucocorticoids; insulin-like growth factor I; osteoblasts; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicine; medicin;

    Sammanfattning : Osteoporosis is a major cause of disability among patients that are dependent on glucocorticoids in the treatment of inflammatory disease. The pathogenesis behind this side effect is complex, involving dysregulation of hormonal systems and direct effects on bone cells. LÄS MER

  5. 5. Vitamin D and Vitamin D-binding Protein in Psoriasis and Effects of Treatment

    Författare :Maria Siekkeri Vandikas; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Nyckelord :MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; psoriasis; vitamin D; vitamin D-binding protein; phototherapy; tumor necrosis factor α inhibitor;

    Sammanfattning : Background: Topical vitamin D analogues constitute an established treatment for psoriasis but the role of vitamin D in the pathogenesis of the disease remains controversial. The in loco production and immunomodulatory effects of vitamin D need to be elucidated. LÄS MER
