1. From genes to blooms : Diversity in microcystin phenotypes and mcy biosynthesis genes in the cyanobacterium Microcystis
Sammanfattning : Cyanobacterial blooms are increasing in occurrence and frequency world-wide, mainly due to eutrophication and increased water temperatures. In freshwater, Microcystis is one of the most common bloom-forming genera, renowned for producing the toxin microcystin which is harmful to humans and other mammals. LÄS MER
2. Distribution and Long-term Effects of the Environmental Neurotoxin β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) : Brain changes and behavioral impairments following developmental exposure
Sammanfattning : Many cyanobacteria are reported to produce the nonprotein amino acid β-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA). Cyanobacteria are extensively distributed in terrestrial and aquatic environments and recently BMAA was detected in temperate aquatic ecosystems, e.g. the Baltic Sea. LÄS MER
3. Excessive Seas : Waste Ecologies of Eutrophication
Sammanfattning : This dissertation researches how perspectives in western industrial societies communicate about and give meaning to environmental degradation through case studies on the causes and effects of cultural eutrophication—namely nutrient pollution, algal blooms, and dead zones—in the Baltic Sea. Utilizing this approach, this dissertation addresses the ecological problems of cultural eutrophication in marine ecosystems by exposing normative claims humans make about the Baltic Sea and its contents as well as detailing how seas that exceed human expectations may offer insights into negotiating differing perspectives, discrepancies in power, and ways of being among humans and non-humans in marine environments. 4. Cooperative Multi-Vehicle Circumnavigation and Tracking of a Mobile Target
Sammanfattning : A multi-vehicle system is composed of interconnected vehicles coordinated to complete a certain task. When controlling such systems, the aim is to obtain a coordinated behaviour through local interactions among vehicles and the surrounding environment. LÄS MER
5. Optimizing Ocean Feature Estimation and Tracking through Adaptive Sampling and Formation Control of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles
Sammanfattning : Increased ocean temperatures caused by climate change are expected to lead to more frequent and severe harmful algal blooms, which deteriorate water quality, cause human illness and fish mortality. Scientific understanding of algal blooms and their dynamics is limited due to the lack of data from such ocean phenomena. LÄS MER
