1. Constructing and Commissioning HELIOS – A High Harmonic Generation Source for Pump-Probe Measurements with sub 50 fs Temporal Resolution : The Development of Experimental Equipment for Extreme Ultraviolet Spectroscopy
Sammanfattning : This thesis presents HELIOS, an in-house laboratory for time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy with extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) probe radiation. A wide span of pump wavelengths can be generated using commercial laser equipment while XUV probe radiation is generated via a high harmonic generation process in a noble gas delivering probe photons with energies between 20 eV and 72 eV. 2. Scanning tunneling microscopy and photoemission studies of Ag films on metal/semiconductor surfaces
Sammanfattning : The research presented in this thesis has been focused on the study of thin Ag films, grown on metal-reconstructed Si(111) and Ge(111) surfaces. The films have been grown at room temperature, and the morphologiesand electronic structures of the films have been investigated using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) and angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy(ARPES). 3. Adventures of III-V Semiconductor Surfaces
Sammanfattning : Tailoring the surface composition and morphology of materials to enable new electronic devices is important for a wide range of applications such as quantum computing or spintronics. A fundamental understanding of the changes induced in the surface during different process steps can help to establish new synthesis routes as well as devices. LÄS MER
4. Thin Mn silicide and germanide layers studied by photoemission and STM
Sammanfattning : The research presented in this thesis concerns experimental studies of thin manganese silicide and germanide layers, grown by solid phase epitaxy on the Si(111)7×7 and the Ge(111)c(2×8) surfaces, respectively. The atomic and electronic structures, as well as growth modes of the epitaxial Mn-Si and Mn-Ge layers, were investigated by low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES), core-level spectroscopy (CLS), and scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM and STS). 5. Effect of Substrate on Bottom-Up Fabrication and Electronic Properties of Graphene Nanoribbons
Sammanfattning : Taking into account the technological demand for the controlled preparation of atomically precise graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with well-defined properties, the present thesis is focused on the investigation of the role of the underlying metal substrate in the process of building GNRs using bottom-up strategy and on the changes in the electronic structure of GNRs induced by the GNR-metal interaction. The combination of surface sensitive synchrotron-radiation-based spectroscopic techniques and scanning tunneling microscopy with in situ sample preparation allowed to trace evolution of the structural and electronic properties of the investigated systems.
