Sammanfattning: This study reaches back to a reading tradition that can be traced to Antiquity and Medieval times; a reading tradition where images and text joined in a symbiosis conveyed the story to the reader. From initially being closely interconnected, the connections between image and text have separated, and the strength of the coupling between image and text has varied over time.At the time of the reformation in Sweden, the distance between the image and the text increased, and the text developed into being an almost independent vehicle for communication between author and reader.During the emergence of the Swedish elementary school, at the turn of the 18th and 19th century, a form of education referred to as “visual experience based” (Åskådningsundervisning) was introduced, a philosophy of education that revitalized the Antique and Medieval traditions with a strong coupling between image and text, using state of the art techniques for reproduction. The idea of using the image as a tool for education developed into the tradition of “school-posters”(Skolplanscher), which served as a foundation in Swedish education until the transition between the elementary school system and the 9-year compulsory school system in 1962.The development of visual argumentation expressed by the use of school posters during the era of transition between the two school systems can be analyzed by tracing the development of the school posters in parallel with curricula documents and normative texts. The visual lines of this argumentation are primarily structural in their nature, expressed by using the perspectives in the image, but also embedded in the way of portraying humans at work and in their everyday business.
