Den Wallinska psalmen

Detta är en avhandling från Stockholm : Almqvist & Wiksell International

Sammanfattning: The subject of this dissertation is the hymnography of Johan Olof Wallin (1779-1839). Johan OlofWallin, poet, orator, and preacher, was a member of the Swedish Academy and subsequently archbishop of the Church of Sweden (1837-1839). From 18 11 to 1819 he participated in the work of theRoyal Hymn-Book Committee. The result of the committee's work was the Swedish Hymn-Book of1819 which, due to Wallin's enormous contribution, both quantitatively and qualitatively, has cometo be known as "the Wallin hymnal".Earlier research on Wallin's work as a hymnographer has been largely concentrated on the work ofthe hymn-book committee and Wallin's early development as a writer of hymns. Theremarkably few studies concerning the hymns that Wallin adapted or wrote himself for the hymn-book are all rather cursory. This study is focused on a limited number of hymn texts and categories ofhymns that can reflect several of the most important aspects of Wallin's hymnal work, as well asindirectly shed light on a number of characteristic elements of the 1819 hymn-book as a whole. In each of the five chapters, the shifting interplay of theological themes and hymnographictechnique is captured with the aid of a close reading of the relevant texts. How are these hymnsdesigned? How do they formulate a theological theme? How is what is said, said? Owing toconsiderations having to do with the different kinds of hymns and groups of hymns included in thissurvey, the manner of working with the texts and the sorts of questions posed varies accordingly.
